Grand Mesa Medical Supply

“We’re not just about products. We’re about independent living. We work toward making people’s lives as independent as possible,” says Kevin Braa, Operations Manager, summing up the philosophy of Grand Mesa Medical Supply.

Grand Mesa Medical Supply is located in an 8000 square foot facility located on North Avenue in Grand Junction. The largest part of their operation is taken up by a showroom displaying a vast array of products designed to help people adapt to a broad spectrum of physical challenges. One room is dedicated to seat lift chairs that can lift a person to standing position when they want to get up from the chair. These chairs, which look like any other living room recliner, operate by hand-held controls and are available in various sizes, styles, and prices with a variety of attractive fabric options that will accent any home decor.

Located in the front of the store are mobility aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, and canes. The staff at Grand Mesa Medical will work with customers and their doctors, their families, nurses, physical therapists, and insurance companies so that the customer will purchase the right products for their physical needs, their homes, and their pocketbooks. Items not in stock can be special-ordered, as can other mobility aids including vehicle ramps, home entrance ramps, and stairway lifts.

Grand Mesa Medical Supply also sells many comfort items including cushions, bed pillows, and therapeutic pillows filled with flax seeds and crushed herbs that can be heated in the microwave and applied to relieve pain and reduce tension. There are therapeutic pillows for the neck, shoulders, hands, knees, and even the eyes.

Also available are what Kevin Braa calls “aids to independent living,” everything from dressing aids like zipper pulls, elastic shoelaces, button holers, extra long shoehorns, and sock and stocking pullers to food preparation and eating aids such as two-handled cups, scooper dishes, and mounted jar openers. “Little things like these can make a big difference in a person’s ability to care for themselves,” says Braa. Grand Mesa Medical Supply can help customers with whatever is needed to help realize an independent lifestyle.

Of course, medical supplies for treating all sorts of injuries are available. Grand Mesa Medical Supply sells knee, ankle, and elbow braces; bandages; tape; dressings; tubing; gloves; and even first aid kits. Uniforms for health professionals and diagnostic tools such as stethoscopes are also available. Since many injuries are temporary, Grand Mesa Medical rents items like crutches and even hospital beds.

Although the variety of items carried by Grand Mesa Medical Supply is impressive, during our tour of the facility we were even more impressed by the caring attitudes of the employees. “We are here to help people,” says Kevin. The staff is aware that many people have emotional difficulties adjusting to changing physical abilities and that it is important to acknowledge those difficulties. “We are a need business instead of a want business,” says owner Ron Hutchings. “We hire compassionate people who can deal with needs in a sensitive way.” Selling the product is not the final step in the process: The staff works with customers so they know how to use the products and get the greatest benefit from them.

Grand Mesa Medical Supply is located at 1708 North Avenue. The telephone number is (970) 241-0833. The toll-free number for out-of-town inquiries is (800) 262-0833.
